Contrary to the popular belief that cataract affects only
the aged persons, new born babies are also getting increasingly affected by it
as 1 to 15 among every 10,000 children suffer due to it. Extracting the clear
lens affected due to cataract, inserting the artificial IOL are the popular
practices in the medical world. However, surgical procedure is combatively risky for children as it
may lead increased elasticity of the lens capsule, decreasing the scleral
rigidity among kids.
Femtosecond laser
has an improved version of capsulotomy, better lens centration, and decreased
posterior subscapular cataract formation, minimizing all the pediatric surgical risks. Though it is
not very well explored to date, substantial evidence of success can be traced
from case reports of a nine year old Afro-American girl with bilateral cortical
cataract case is successfully treated with femtosecond assisted cataract
extraction.
