Can LenSx Femtosecond Laser Extract Cataract among Children Effectively?

Contrary to the popular belief that cataract affects only the aged persons, new born babies are also getting increasingly affected by it as 1 to 15 among every 10,000 children suffer due to it. Extracting the clear lens affected due to cataract, inserting the artificial IOL are the popular practices in the medical world. However, surgical procedure is combatively risky for children as it may lead increased elasticity of the lens capsule, decreasing the scleral rigidity among kids.

Femtosecond laser has an improved version of capsulotomy, better lens centration, and decreased posterior subscapular cataract formation, minimizing all the pediatric surgical risks. Though it is not very well explored to date, substantial evidence of success can be traced from case reports of a nine year old Afro-American girl with bilateral cortical cataract case is successfully treated with femtosecond assisted cataract extraction.
